Nevada is known for being hot and dry. Reno, Sparks, and the surrounding areas are no different, but we also have cold weather in winter. Often the temperatures are below freezing. If you have a concrete floor in the home, especially in the bedroom, the cold makes getting up in the morning more difficult. That chill from the floor goes right through your bunny slippers and into your feet, practically making you launch right back into the comforter on your bed. That’s why radiant floor heating is popular. It warms the floor so your feet can move along with your day. But some people get concerned with the idea of using epoxy coatings on floors with radiant heating. Do the two things go together?
Successful Radiant Floor Heating
Many people enjoy the colors and patterns of epoxy coatings in their home while benefiting from radiant heating underneath their concrete. A successful installation requires following certain steps during the installation process. Therefore, keep the following tips in mind:
- Make sure to turn off any underfloor heating for at least 4 days to make sure the floor’s temperature is stabilized. This allows the epoxy to cure properly.
- Leave the floor heating off for at least 7 days after the epoxy coating is applied. Again, this helps ensure your epoxy floor cures and sets the way it’s supposed to.
- Bring the heat back gradually. Over the next few days, increase your radiant heating by no more than 9 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) per day until you reach your desired level.
These tips ensure your epoxy coatings set without complications. Of course, any radiant heating system will have recommended limits. Most have a maximum range of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). Epoxy coatings can take a lot more heat than that, but why test the limits? Radiant heating is not designed to simulate walking on coals. The idea is to have a comfortable floor: warm and welcoming, not too cold or too hot. Epoxy coatings help you reach that goal by protecting your concrete floor with reliable durability – and the customization options will look radiant too!
